Alcohol Education Program

The Alcohol Education Program (AEP) is a 2-hour in-person class for students to learn how to make more informed decisions about drinking. The goal is to consider what potential risks are for current behavior and how to modify behavior to reduce risk of negative consequences. Topics covered in this course include: alcohol expectancy theory, assessment of use, alcohol and the body, blood alcohol concentration, biphasic effects of alcohol, polysubstance use, and risk reduction strategies.

Students are typically sanctioned to complete these sessions as a part of an alcohol violation. However, any student may request to complete this course voluntarily or meet with the Wellness Coordinator due to concerns or questions regarding their personal use of alcohol.

Drug Education Program

The Drug Education Program (DEP) is a 2-hour in-person class for students to learn about the impact of substance use, reflect on personal use, and consider risk reduction strategies. The goal is to consider what potential risks are for current behavior and how to modify behavior to reduce risk of negative consequences. Topics covered in this course include: assessment of use, cannabis, substances and the brain, tolerance and overdose, polysubstance use, and risk reduction strategies.

Students are typically sanctioned to complete these sessions as a part of a drug violation. However, any student may request to complete this course voluntarily or meet with the Wellness Coordinator due to concerns or questions regarding their personal use of substances.

BASICS

Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is a brief intervention program for students who have violated the alcohol policy at the University of Tennessee and meet criteria for being at higher risk. Our staff conducts BASICS in two one-on-one meetings with students. Motivational Interviewing techniques are the foundation for BASICS to meet students where they are to elicit change. The purpose of these meetings is to assess current pattern of use, engage students in a dialogue about their use, and provide resources. During these sessions, the student completes the online eCHECKUP TO GO – Alcohol assessment.

Although students are typically sanctioned to complete these sessions as a part of an alcohol violation, any student may volunteer to meet with the Wellness Coordinator due to concerns or questions regarding their personal use of alcohol.

CSI

Student Counseling Center
The university’s primary facility for personal counseling, psychotherapy, and psychological outreach and consultation services. The Student Counseling Center’s mission is to promote the psychological, educational, and social well-being of the students of the University of Tennessee and to help prepare them to be productive members of society.

eCHECKUP TO GO—Alcohol
A brief self-assessment tool available for use by students to examine their own alcohol use. eCHECKUP TO GO provides immediate personalized feedback about individual drinking patterns, specific health and personal consequences, unique personal and family risk factors, and campus and community support and emergency services. Answers are CONFIDENTIAL. No name is attached to the form and no personally identifiable information from this survey will be stored.

 eCHECKUP TO GO—Cannabis
A brief assessment and feedback tool designed to educate college students about their cannabis use. eCHECKUP TO GO provides immediate personalized feedback about individual responses and compares them to national and local college norms Answers are CONFIDENTIAL. No name is attached to the form and no personally identifiable information from this survey will be stored.


Community Resources

Cornerstone of Recovery
Provides treatment to individuals and their families to address substance use disorders. Cornerstone provides medical detox, residential, intensive outpatient, outpatient, and support living programs.

CenterPointe
A program of Helen Ross McNabb Center that provides alcohol and drug residential services as well as medical detoxification and a crisis stabilization unit.

Peninsula Lighthouse and Outpatient Centers
Provides intensive outpatient programs for substance use disorders as well as outpatient therapy services.

Tennova Behavioral Health Services
Provides a range of outpatient services including partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs for substance use disorders.

Blount Memorial Behavioral Health
Provides inpatient medically supervised detox as well as partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs for substance use disorders.

Metro Drug Coalition (MDC)
A non-profit organization that provides substance abuse prevention resources for family, teachers, businesses, faith leaders, and physicians in Knoxville.

The Coalition for Healthy and Safe Campus Communities (CHASCo)

CHASCo is a collection of higher education professionals who address health and safety issues on our various campuses. They represent both private and public colleges and universities in the state of Tennessee.

CollegeDrinkingPrevention.gov
A resource for comprehensive research-based information on issues related to alcohol abuse and binge drinking among college students.

Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery (HECAOD)

HECAOD is resource for colleges and universities across the nation on alcohol and drug misuse prevention and recovery. It is a joint collaboration between The Ohio State University’s College of Social Work, College of Pharmacy, Office of Student Life, Generation Rx, and the Collegiate Recovery Community.

National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) 

Provides leadership in the national effort to reduce alcohol-related problems through research coordination, collaboration and dissemination of research findings.

    • CollegeAIM is a new resource to help schools address harmful and underage student drinking. Developed with leading college alcohol researchers and staff, it is an easy-to-use and comprehensive tool to identify effective alcohol interventions.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
Works to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.

SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP)
A searchable online registry of more than 230 interventions supporting mental health promotion, substance abuse prevention, and mental health and substance abuse treatment. NREPP connects members of the public to intervention developers in order to learn how to implement these approaches in their communities.
